Syllabus (or programme)
1. Cervantes, modern novelist. The recovery of Cervantes in the 18th century. Cervantes and the realist novel: Pérez Galdós. The endurance of Cervantes in 20th-century narrative.
2. The historical novel. Romanticism and the historical novel. Some types of historical novel. The national episode. Archaeological and exotic novels. Contemporary types of historical novels.
3. The novel and the literature of the self. Autobiography and the novel. The picaresque model. From Lazarillo to Vida by Torres Villarroel. Imaginary lives: biography and the novel.
4. Some contemporary types of novel. The dictator novel: from Tirano Banderas by Valle to La fiesta del Chivo by Vargas Llosa. The science fiction novel. The police novel and the noir novel.
